Brewlog: Inaugural Drawl - Golden Ale

My first brew. Much love to Brew-journeyman Jason Bunn for his expert knowledge and facilities. We attempted to engineer our own loose clone of Flying Dog's Tire Bite Golden Ale, from materials available in the Asheville Brewers Supply catalog.

  • 1 lbs. Wheat (steeped pre-boil)
  • 1 lbs. Munich malt (steeped pre-boil)
  • 3.3 lbs. Cooper's canned Light Malt Extract
  • 3.3 lbs. Cooper's canned Wheat Malt Extract
  • 0.5 oz. Hallertauer Hersbrucker hops 2.5% AA (60 min.)
  • 0.5 oz. " (30 min.)
  • 0.5 oz. " (5 min.)

Brewed 10-19-08 at the Bunn residence. Ended up with a specific gravity of 1.050. Fermented until the 10-26-08 racking to a secondary fermenter for clarifying, at which point the final gravity was 1.016, yeilding 4.4625% alcohol by volume and 14.6 IBU. My first whiff of fermented wort threw me across the room! Brewing schedule yielded to real life pressures, until we were able to bottle on 11-15-08, adding 0.5 cups of corn sugar.
The resulting beer was surprisingly clear for a malt extract, with the desired golden color. I think it'll be a hit this holiday season. My only regret is I don't know what to brew next.
